HSG admission test
The number of places for foreign applicants at the University of St.Gallen is limited by law. Depending on the number of available places, the applicants with the best results are admitted. School grades (e.g. A-level grades) are not considered in the admission decision.
The following two dates are available for the admission test:
- Wednesday, 16 February 2022
- Wednesday, 13 July 2022
The HSG admission test will take place as an online test. This test can be taken from home. It is not possible to take the test on campus.
If you submit your complete application by January 15, you can register by January 31 for the admission test in February. For later applications, only the date in July is available.
Who has to take the admission test?
Foreign applicants for a Bachelor's degree who have recognised secondary school leaving certificates have to take the admission test.
The following applicants are exempt from the selection process:
- applicants with Swiss or Liechtenstein nationality
- applicants with a Swiss permanent residence permit C
- applicants with a recognised Swiss or Liechtenstein maturity certificate (Maturität, Matura)
- applicants with a degree from a recognised Swiss university
How do I register for the admission test?
You must first apply for matriculation at the HSG via the online application tool. If you fulfil all admission requirements, you will receive in your electronic mailbox (Compass Mailbox) a confirmation letter with information on how to register for the admission test. Please find the link to your mailbox in the Online-Application user account at the top right of your status overview page. You can access your mailbox using your Online-Application log-in data.
As soon as you have registered for the admission test successfully the chosen date will show on your online application status page.
If you submit your complete application by January 15, you can register by January 31 for the admission test in February. For later applications, only the date in July is available.
The admission test can only be taken once for the chosen academic year. You may repeat the test once - the following year at the earliest.
What do I have to consider?
A notebook or desktop PC with a functioning camera, microphone and sound is required. Mobile devices (smartphone or tablet) are not permitted, as fully functioning proctoring is not guaranteed on these. Detailed information will be sent to the candidates of the admission test approx. 10 days before the respective admission test by e-mail directly from our test provider.
Students may use a pocket calculator. No other aids or additional resources are permitted when conducting the admission test as an online test.
How and when do I find out the test result?
The test results will be available in your electronic mailbox (Compass Mailbox) by Friday after the test. Log into your Online-Application user account to check the status of your application.

Can I prepare myself for the admission test?
The admission test at the University of St.Gallen tests aptitude and not knowledge. Intellectual capacity, creativity and the ability to solve problems are crucial. The admission test is divided into five sections: text analysis, quantitative problem-solving, pattern recognition, language systems and diagram interpretation. We recommend you take a look at the sample questions that we provide for preparation.
Do I have to take the admission test onsite in St.Gallen?
Foreign applicants for the Bachelor's degree programme at the University of St.Gallen can only be admitted by taking the University's admission test.
If the test is held on campus, attendance in St.Gallen is compulsory.
Exception:
If your legal residence at the time of obtaining your secondary school leaving certificate was outside Europe (all member states of the European Council and Belarus), you may be admitted with a sufficient score on one of the following international study qualification tests:
Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)
Graduate Record Examinations (GRE)
Law School Admission Test (LSAT)
The score that determines whether you will be accepted to the Bachelor's degree programme for the semester in question will only be determined once the results of the admission tests of the University of St.Gallen are known.
You have to submit the test result with your application documents in due time. Your application will only be considered if you can demonstrate at least the following scores: GMAT 650 points, GRE Revised (quantitative reasoning) 158 points, LSAT 161 points.
To allow us to verify your test result electronically, please state the institution code of the University of St.Gallen when taking the test. If you have already taken the test, please instruct GMAC or ETS to provide us with your test result.
